A rotation chart maps where six players must start when the ball is served. It is not a map of the final offense or defense, because players often move immediately after serve contact.
The front row is commonly described as zones 4, 3, and 2 from left to right when facing the net; the back row is 5, 6, and 1. When a team wins the right to serve, its players rotate one position clockwise, and the player in zone 1 serves.
After the serve, a setter may move toward the net and hitters may move into attack lanes, but legal starting relationships still matter. Before a match, ask a teammate to show where you begin and where you move next. One reminder such as “start right back, then defend middle” is easier to use than memorizing an entire system at once.
