New setters do not need advanced deception to help a team. A high, controlled set to an available hitter is a valuable first skill.
Move early so the ball is above your forehead rather than behind or far beside you. Bend your knees, face the intended target, and raise both hands with fingers comfortably spread. Let your legs extend as your hands guide a quick, clean release; avoid slapping or catching the ball.
For practice, choose a high outside set that gives a hitter time to approach. Call for the second ball when appropriate and tell teammates where you are setting if your group uses that language. If you are not the designated setter, a calm emergency set to open space is still better than giving up a connected second contact.
